For Lawyers
I consider [trial by jury] as the only anchor ever yet imagined by man, by which a government can be held to the principles of its constitution.
– Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Paine, 1789
Many cases should be settled before trial, and most are. But you may have cases that should be tried—but won’t be—because:
- You’ve never tried a case
- You’ve tried all the cases you want to try
- You are too busy to prepare and try a case
- You don’t like to try cases
- You are afraid you might lose the trial
Maybe you just need some help, an experienced partner, to go into battle with. Or, maybe you want to be done with it and hand it off to be tried.
I love to try cases. I believe trying a case, to a jury or to a judge, is the best and highest use of my talents as a lawyer. I also believe jury trials are a fundamental pillar of democracy, and that a juror’s role is a crucial check and balance to the power of government—including the power of judges—and that jurors are indispensable to deciding what justice means in our country.
I have been trying cases successfully in the state and federal courts of Ohio and Kentucky for three decades. If you have a case that you believe should be prepared for trial, I would be happy to discuss with you how I can help. Whether my role is second-chairing, first-chairing, or something else, I will consider whatever arrangement you desire. I will work out with you an equitable arrangement that is good for you and for your client.
